Usually, you would just buy the whole IR module which contains the transmitter, receiver, and amplifier. However, in this post, I’ll show you how you can make your own IR distance sensor/motion detector module.
Schematic
I wired up the LM358 op-amp to work as a comparator and turn on the LED on the output when the input signal exceeds a certain threshold set by the potentiometer.
Note: If you would like to for example measure the distance with a microcontroller like an Arduino you should connect the op-amp as an amplifier with a voltage divider providing a negative feedback loop.
