In this post, I will show you how to replace a worn-out cruise control switch/button on the BMW F10 steering wheel. You should be able to do this without removing the steering wheel, but I removed it(see this post to see how) as it’s easier, and I restored the steering wheel at the same time, so I had to remove it anyway.
Switch Replacement
Unscrew the screws shown to remove the top cover plastic cover of the steering wheel.
I recommend using one of those plastic spudgers to unclip and separate the top from the bottom plastic cover to avoid scratching the plastic.
Next, unscrew this screw(both left and right sides) to remove the paddle shifters if you have them. Now you gain access to the screw at the bottom that holds in the buttons assembly.
I seem not to have taken a proper picture of it, but unscrew three shiny Philips head screws on the back of the button assembly to open it up. You can see two of the screws on the back of the right-side button assembly.
You will try to push in one pair of the tabs, then pop out one side of the silver plastic trim. Then you will try to spread apart and push out the other pair of tabs, and push apart the other side of the trim to fully unclip it.
Now for the button itself, try to push these tabs inward and then down with a screwdriver, first on one side, then on the other, and the button should almost or fully out.
I ran into a slight problem with the Chinese knock-off button I got from AliExpress. The tolerances weren’t the best(as usual with the Chinese stuff), so it didn’t fit, and I had to take matters into my own hands and sand it down. The first image is the original button; the second one is the replacement.
I sanded down the button a bit on both sides and enlarged the holes a bit.
And it finally fits. Now do everything we just did but in reverse to reassemble everything back together.
All done.
